The Motor Vehicles Department was set up under 213(1) which is a part of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Such acts can be imposed on the citizens staying within the country. The Transport Commissioner is the head of the administration. The Motor Vehicle Administration accomplishes numerous supplies to this act. The number of RTO (Regional Transport Office) is established all across the nation. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 states that the RTO is bound to carry out activities and operations that are placed within the act. 

 

Functions performed by Regional Transport Offices in Tamil Nadu 

The Regional Transport Office(RTO) is set up to look after vehicle operations in India. The main motive of this governmental organisation is to manage a set of databases for every vehicle which is moving within the country and it also circulates a license to the drivers. Apart from this, this particular organisation is also associated with the handling of affairs like inspection of pollution, accumulation of taxes, and also administers which vehicle is abiding by the road freightage laws. 

  1. Registration of recent vehicles.

Process for vehicle registration in Tamil Nadu

Registration of vehicle is mandatory in Tamil Nadu in order to safeguard and maintain the rod safety laws. It is necessary to apply for the registration certificate within 7 days of buying a new vehicle. The certificate contains all the important information related to vehicle and the owner. Listed below are the supporting documents that are needed by the authority to issue the registration certificate.

  1. Operational Form-20

  2. Form 21- sales authorization document 

  3. Road merit authentication and Pollution Under Control (PUC) authentication and Form 22- from the maker of the vehicle.

  4. Form-60/61 from the Income Tax Division or PAN card. 

  5. Authentication of insurance of the vehicle.  

  6. Evidence of residence (anyone):

    • -Ration card
    • -Voter Id card
    • -LIC Policy 
    • -Attested affidavit by the seeker
  7. Passport size images- 3 copies 

  8. If vehicles are registered on a temporary basis then documents for so will be required. 

Process to transfer the ownership of vehicles in Tamil Nadu 

If someone wishes to transfer the ownership of one's vehicle into someone else's name as he is getting rid of his old vehicle then the owner must file in an application in Form-29 with the Regional Transport Officer. 

The list of documents that are required are as follows: 

  1. Form 29: Announcement of the transfer of vehicle (duplication).

  2. Form 30 completely filled with the vehicle has been mortgaged. 

  3. Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC).

  4. Vehicle Insurance Documentation

  5. Proof of residence (anyone):

    • -Ration card
    • -Voter ID card
    • -Life Insurance Policy
    • -Passport size images
    • -Salary slips provided by the government
    • Attested affidavit by the applicant
  6. A NOC (No Objection Certificate) must be taken from the financier only if the vehicle has been bought on finance. 

  7. Proof of road tax.

Transposition of ownership from any other state

If you have purchased your vehicle from any other state and you are shifting to Tamil Nadu due to your work, then you will require to register your vehicle. On the other hand, if you only want to reside within the state for a period of 12 months or so then you need not register your vehicle once again. The following documents are needed while you re-register your vehicle in the state of Tamil Nadu.

  1. Form no 20 duly signed.

  2. Form no 27 duly signed so that a new authentication number can be provided. 

  3. Form no 28 for the application of NOC.

  4. Form no 29 is an announcement of the vehicle ownership rights. 

  5. Form 33 is an announcement of the alteration of residence. 

  6. Form 30 requests for the transfer of ownership.

  7. Certificate of vehicle registration 

  8. Certification from the police.

  9. Documentation of the insurance of the vehicle.

  10. Proof of residence (anyone):
