What is a Permit

What is permit fees and permit period? Well, before to know all about both these things, let’s first understand what a permit is. Permit is mandatory for transport or commercial vehicles. According to the provisions made under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, it is a legal permission issued by the Transport Authority to use a vehicle as a transport mean.  However, transport vehicle that belongs to government, police, fire brigade, ambulances and cranes are not included in the list. The other goods vehicles with below 3000 kg weight are also exempted from the list of vehicles that require permit.  So, it means that if you want to operate your transport vehicle either in a state or across the country, you need permission in the form of;

  • State Permit (if you want to operate in one state only, go for state permit only)
  • National Permit (if you want to operate your vehicle in different state, choose national or multi-state permit)

Permits According to Type of Vehicle

Let’s divide the permits according to the types of vehicles. Depending upon the requirement for which the vehicle needs to be used, permits can be divided into two categories;

  • Goods Vehicles Permit
  • Passenger Vehicles Permit

Goods Vehicle Permit Fees and Permit Period

Different types of goods vehicles include- Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) and Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV). Find below the information related to their permit fees and period

For Local/State Permit

If you want to obtain a local permit to operate your vehicle within a state, obtain a permit under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 Section 79. The information of this thing is as follows;

For National Permit

You need a national permit, if you want to operate your vehicle at least in three states with the exclusion of Delhi. To apply for this permit, you have to fill the Form 46 and Form 48. The information related to fees and validity is as below;

Counter Signatures of Goods Carrier Permit

It is issued by the Regional Transport Authority in one state to enter in to another state. However, Delhi can restrict a vehicle entry if it is registered in other state and have a gross weight more than 7500 kg with no clean fuel.  Apart from this, temporary permit is issued on daily basis on a nominal fee which you need to pay as a tax to states borders.

Renewal of a Permit and Fees

For permit renewal for next five years, you have to submit the application with the renewable fees 15 days before to the expiration of the permit. The renewable fees would be same as the fees that you have made for the first time to issue a permit. If you fail to pay the fee by the due date, you may have to pay late fees.

Passenger Vehicles Permits

What is permit fees and permit period? These factors are also concerned to passengers’ vehicles. Auto rickshaw and taxi permits are two key types of permits provided under passenger vehicles category. Fees for these permits differs state wise. However, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) is revamping the permit regime to make a uniform system so that everything becomes simple and same in every state for all vehicle owners. However, many states’ transport authorities have been already included this thing in their e-Services and providing as much as possible information about what is permit fees and permit period online to educate and help new vehicles owners.
