Fuel economy reduces in winters because the liquid that lubricates the vehicle engine thickens, thus causing more friction. Also, the tyre pressure drops with drop in temperature, the batteries have to work extra hard and so on. Basically, winters is a tough time for vehicles and vehicle owners when it comes to fuel and maintenance costs. Here are some tips to help you increase fuel economy of your vehicle this winter season:

  • Do not park your vehicle outside in the cold, instead park in the garage so that the temperature of the engine does not drop too low.
  • Vehicle manufacturers recommend a different oil for vehicles when the temperatures are too low. Check the oil recommended for your vehicle and use it in winters.
  • Idling the car does not warm up the engine. Start driving 30 seconds after you start the engine and move at a moderate speed for about 3 kilometres to avoid engine wear.
  • Instead of taking numerous short trips, plan a long trip covering longer distance. This way you will not require to warm your vehicle engine numerous times, thus saving on fuel.
  • Check tyre pressure regularly as it drops with a drop in temperature. Driving with low tyre pressure will result in more rolling resistance thus less fuel economy.
  • As temperature drops, the air density increases thus increasing the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle, also called wind resistance. Try and reduce resistance from your end by removing roof racks from your four wheeler and cleaning the snow on the vehicle before hitting the road.

While you keep in mind these simple tips to increase fuel efficiency of your vehicle, don’t forget to drive safely. Visibility in winters is low so be careful on the road. Keep your speed in check and make sure your vehicle insurance is in place. If not, then compare vehicle insurance today and get your two/four wheeler insured.
