Meghalaya RTO (Meghalaya Transport Department), formed under the Road Transport Act of 1950, is the transportation regulatory department in the landlocked state of Meghalaya. Why do You Need to Register Your Vehicle at RTO Meghalaya?
The RTO Meghalaya ensures better movement of vehicles within the state carrying both goods and passengers. The authority takes responsibility for implementing the rules and regulations stated in the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. Registering your vehicle is a legal requirement in India under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act. As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, no unregistered vehicles are allowed in India and doing so will cost you huge fines as a penalty. How to Register Your Vehicle at Meghalaya RTO?

Ownership Transfer at Meghalaya RTO
The transfer of vehicle registration certificate from one state to another is required in the following scenarios:
- If the owner sells his/her vehicle to someone living in another State
- If the owner decides to settle down for good in a new State
- Death of the primary owner of the vehicle
The applicant/ subsequent vehicle owner can apply to the concerned Regional Transport Office Meghalaya for the transfer of ownership in the registration certificate. The following steps are required to initiate the transfer of ownership.
- Submit the 2 copies of Form 29 or Form 30 (as required).
- Prepare all the documents, including chassis number, original RC, police FIR copy, PUC certificate, vehicle insurance certificate, NOC from the financer, PAN card or Form 60/61, and address proof.
- Apply at the concerned Meghalaya RTO with all the documents, applicable fees, and taxes.
- The RTO officials carry out vehicle inspections and verify all the documents.
- The process begins when the officials start pencil-tracing the chassis number against the registration number in the RTO registry.
- The officials announce the registration number if your vehicle clears the inspection.

- Ownership transfer is completed after the successful verification, and the same is updated in the RC.
For the vehicle sold to an area under the jurisdiction of another RTO, it is mandatory to submit an intimation to your current RTO within 30 days. If the vehicle is sold to another person in the same jurisdiction of the same Meghalaya RTO, the applicant should submit the intimation within 14 days.

Applying for NOC at Meghalaya RTO
