Ahmedabad is the capital city of the state of Gujarat. It is a sprawling city with a population of about 6 million. It is also the 5th largest city in India which means that there is no dearth of road transport in the city.

The RTO Ahmedabad was established under Section 213(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 to ensure safe and organized growth of road transport in the city. The Commissioner of Transport, head of the RTO makes sure that the public follows all the rules and regulations that have been laid down by the Act.

Roles and Responsibilities of the RTO Office in Ahmedabad

RTO Ahmedabad performs as the authority that enforces rules and regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act. The primary functions of the RTO are ensuring the rules of vehicle registration are followed, driving license issuance, collection of road tax, and issuing permits to the vehicles that are registered in the city. There are many other duties of that include:

  • Issues Licenses: RTO reviews the applications for licenses and issuance of licenses like driving license, international driving license, and learner’s license

Types of vehicle Registration:

  • Temporary Vehicle: This is the type of registration that the dealer does at the time of purchase of a vehicle so that the vehicle owner can legally drive the vehicle on the road. The validity of this registration is only one month. Before the temporary registration expires, the vehicle owner must get the vehicle permanently registered at the nearest RTO.
  • Permanent Registration: It is mandatory to carry the registration certificate with you whenever you drive your vehicle. You can get your vehicle registered at the RTO Ahmedabad. For registering, you must submit all the relevant documents and fill-up the form. Within a few days, you will receive the registration certificate that you can use to drive your car anywhere in India. 

Types of driving license that are issued by Ahmedabad RTO:

  • Motorcycle has an engine capacity up to 50cc: This driving license is issued to applicants who are 16 years or older. For getting the driving license, you need to get all the required documents with you and written consent from your parents or guardian. Without consent, you will not get the license, so the driving license must be issued. 
  • Two-wheelers without any gears: This is the driving license issued to applicants who are above 18 years of age and want to drive two-wheelers like scooters. There is not engine capacity bound to this one, so anyone who has a license can drive these vehicles. 
  • Two-wheelers with gears: It is issued to the applicants who are over 18 years of age and want to drive two-wheelers with gears like scooters and bikes. You need to apply with the relevant documents to get the license issued.
  • Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs): This is the license issued to applicants who want to drive three-wheelers, cars, jeeps, etc. An auto-rickshaw driver and cab driver can drive their vehicles with the help of this license as this fulfills the mandate for driving these vehicles. There is no need to get a separate commercial driving license to drive a three-wheeler or a cab.
  • Medium/Heavy Duty Commercial Vehicle: To get a license to drive commercial vehicles like heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and buses the applicant must be over or equal to 18 years of age, must be qualified till class 8th, and having a driving certificate from one of the state registered school.

1. What is the procedure of registering a vehicle that is registered in a state other than Gujarat?

Ans: You must get your vehicle registered in 30 days after you move to Ahmedabad. For getting your vehicle registered you must pay the road taxes applicable in Ahmedabad. Then you must fill an application form no 20, 21, and 22 at the RTO Ahmedabad along with documents like an original copy of the RC, insurance certificate, and p0pPUC. 2. How to get a duplicate RC in Ahmedabad?

Ans: If you have lost the RC of your vehicle then you can get a duplicate RC from the RTO Ahmedabad. For this, you need to apply form along with documents like a police report that mentions the details of the loss, NOC from the dealer (if the vehicle is on a loan), address proof, PUC, and insurance certificate. You also need to pay Rs 30 if you want RC for a bike or Rs 100 if it is for a car. 

3. What are the documents required for transferring ownership of the vehicle in Ahmedabad?

Ans: If you want to transfer the ownership of your vehicle to another buyer then you must visit the RTO Ahmedabad and apply along with forms no. 19 and 30 (write the chassis number with a pencil). You may have to submit form no 31 (if the transfer is due to inheritance) and form no. 32 (if due to public auction). Along with that you also need to submit the original copy of the registration certificate, PUC, vehicle insurance document, identity proof, and address proof.

4. How can I renew my RC from the RTO Ahmedabad?

Ans: The registration for your vehicle is valid for 15 years. Once this has expired you have to get your vehicle re-registered. You must submit CMV Form no 25, original RC, PUC, road tax receipt, insurance certificate, address proof, and identity proof. Also, your vehicle needs to pass the fitness test so that it can be re-registered. 

5. How can I change my address in the RC book from Ahmedabad RTO?

Ans: If there is a change in your address you can easily get it updated in your RC by visiting the RTO in Ahmedabad. The documents that you need to submit include form no 33 (with chassis print), NOC from the financer (in case the vehicle has been purchased through a loan), PUC, original RC, address proof of the vehicle, and insurance document along with the fee that is levied for the address change.
