Under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, a registration certificate is mandatory for all vehicle owners while driving. Before we go ahead and understand the process of applying for duplicate RC, it's important to understand when and why would a vehicle owner require a duplicate RC.

  • There has been a theft of your vehicle, and all the important original documents, including the original RC were stolen with the vehicle. Or,

Is Getting A Duplicate RC the Same as Renewal of RC?

No, the renewal of the RC book is not the same as the duplication of the RC. The renewal of RC is required when your existing RC is about to expire or has expired. When you apply for the renewal of RC, the vehicle undergoes a fitness test. Upon successful completion only, the renewed RC is allotted.

Why is it Necessary to Have a Registration Certificate?

“No person shall drive any motor vehicle, and no owner of a motor vehicle shall cause or permit the vehicle to be driven in any public place or any other place unless the vehicle is registered in accordance with this Chapter and the certificate of registration of the vehicle has not been suspended or cancelled and the vehicle carries a registration mark displayed in the prescribed manner: Provided that nothing in this section shall apply to a motor vehicle in possession of a dealer subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by the Central Government.”

Application Process of Duplicate RC Online

The application procedure for duplicate RC is not universal and centralized, but a few documentary requirements may vary from state to state. A vehicle owner can reach out to an agent to complete the process of applying for a duplicate RC. Or the vehicle owner can execute the steps on their own to save some cost or obtain the services of an agent. Not all vehicle owners are savvy enough to follow the online steps of how to apply for duplicate RC. 

To handle vehicle-related service requests and make the process of duplicate RC online and download RC online easy for all, the government has enabled Parivahan Sewa portal governed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The portal works similarly to the very popular Passport Sewa portal. It is a centralized portal that accepts application requests that are further submitted to the concerned Transport Authority.

Steps to Follow for Duplicate RC Book Online

To apply for duplicate RC online, you need to follow the steps listed below:

  1. Go to the Parivahan Sewa website. 
  2. Scroll down to the vehicle-related services section and select the ‘vehicle registration’ tab by clicking on ‘more’.  
  3. Select your state name.
  4. Provide your registration number, state, and RTO address and click on proceed.
  5. Go to the duplicate registration tab.
  6. Fill out an application form online. This requires information on the police FIR and Vehicle insurance information.
  7. Submit the required service fee (which includes the fee of a smart card) online with the application form. The fee varies depending on the category of a motor vehicle. For example, it costs around 700 Rs for a duplicate RC for a Light Motor Vehicle category, including motorcars, jeeps, taxis, and delivery vans.
  8. A receipt will be generated on successful payment, which needs to be submitted along with other documents at the governing transport authority office.

Documents Required for Duplicate RC 

Before applying for the duplicate RC online, a vehicle owner or applicant must prepare the following documents (the documents marked with * may be required in certain states).

  1. Application form 26 (in duplicate) 
  2. Form 34 (in case the vehicle is on hire purchase/ lease/ hypothecation)
  3. Attested copy of Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
  4. Original copy of FIR/Police certificate - This can be obtained by registering an FIR with the Police station under which the act (theft, lost, stolen) occurred, explaining the situation. Many states permit this procedure online.
  5. Attested copy of Proof of address*
  6. Attested copy of Valid insurance certificate*
  7. Challan clearance from traffic police & Enforcement Wing Transport Department in case of commercial vehicles*
  8. Signature Identification of owner*
  9. Attested copy of PAN Card or form 60 & form 61 (as applicable) *
  10. Tax clearance from the Accounts Department in case of commercial vehicles*
  11. Chassis & Engine Pencil Print*
  12. Affidavit stating that the original RC is lost
  13. Affidavit stating that RC is lost and has not been impounded*

The copies have to be Attested by MLA/Nigam Parshad/Gazetted officer/Public Notary.

Upon receipt of all required documents with the application, the registering authority may issue a duplicate RC with a clear mark of "Duplicate" within 15-30 days from the submission date. You can also download duplicate RC online after it is assessed.

Check the Status of Duplicate RC Online

To check the status of duplicate RC online, you can directly visit the Pariwahan Sewa website. Go to the vehicle-related services, go to the duplicate RC tab, and click ‘more’. After providing the necessary details, like the application number or registration number, you can check the status of your duplicate RC application. 

Steps for Duplicate RC Download

Once, your duplicate RC is processed, follow the given steps to complete the duplicate RC download. 

  • Visit the online website of Parivahan. 
  • Go to the ‘Online Services’ and select ‘Vehicle Related Services’ from the drop-down menu. 
  • On the next window, select the ‘State Name’, and a new window will open. 
  • Provide your registration number, state, and RTO region. Click on the box to accept the privacy policy and tap on ‘Proceed’. 
  • Click on the ‘Download Document’ option and then select the ‘RC Print’ option. 
  • On the next page, provide the necessary information, like the registration and chassis numbers, to validate. 
  • Validate the OTP received on your registered mobile number. 
  • Hence, you will complete the duplicate RC download. The pdf is saved on your device.
